Substance abuse and prescription drug diversion are among the most pressing issues in the US. 1 in 10 patients who take addictive medication (opioids, stimulants, antidepressants) develop a substance abuse disorder. In an anonymous survey we conducted of hundreds of patients who are/were taking addictive medication, over half stated they overtook their prescribed dosage nearly every day. To make matters worse, under the current system, doctors are left in the dark with virtually no way of knowing if their patients are adhering to prescriptions, and can thus do little to intervene.
Through our senior project, PillBot, we aimed to address this two part problem with a two-part solution. We designed PillBot to be a smart dispenser to prevent addiction to medication by not only making it easy for patients to adhere to their prescriptions, but also providing doctors with the ability to track patient adherence and intervene when necessary.
