The goal of this project is to provide young people who are going out and partying with a way to stay protected and connected. Personal safety is a major concern in today’s society and for young people, these concerns are especially prevalent during a night out partying. These night outs often involve friends, dancing, and drinking - and although fun, have the potential to go wrong. The reality is that there are threats that exist and people are more susceptible to them when partying. There is a common awareness of the possibilities of crimes, assault or accidents especially when under the influence of alcohol. Recent data shows that two out of three women aged 16 to 34 years experienced at least one form of harassment in the last year. This statistic highlights the need for safety mechanisms that can allow young people to feel safe and secure when having fun.
Our team will address this problem by creating a personal safety wearable in the form of a discrete wristband. This device will be equipped with GPS tracking in the case that individuals drift from the group during a night out. It will also have pulse sensing to monitor everyone’s wellbeing, which is important in cases where someone is distressed and in danger. The product will be accompanied by an app that allows the group to tap into the readings and retrieve the relative locations and sensor readings.
