Inspiration
Inspiration
Our main inspiration was the students in our community who struggled with mental health. We wanted to create a long-lasting and impactful change in our community so that more students would not struggle as much and would feel like they had a safe and fun space to better their mental health.
What it does
Tea-Rexes is a game app that helps players better their habits by letting them complete tasks, such as brushing their teeth and meditating, to help fill a dinosaur's "cup of tea", or energy. With each task, the player is prompted with a fact surrounding the importance of the habit being completed.
How we built it
Our team mainly built the app through MIT App Inventor. But, we also used outside sources to learn about the Inventor. Along with that, we used collaboration among ourselves to share and use each other’s talents, such as drawing and planning, to create the app.
Challenges we ran into
The biggest challenge we ran into was using the correct platform to code. Originally, our team wanted to use Flutter since we thought it would provide the greatest learning curve and produce the best possible outcome. However, due to our limited time, we could not fully learn the different aspects of code needed with Flutter. Under the pressure of time, our group decided to use MIT App Inventor as it was a platform a lot of us had used before and were familiar with.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We are proud of the planning skills that we fell back on a lot during the entire process. Although the end product required extensive drawing and coding skills, the lesser talked about skills such as collaboration and planning were the ones that we utilized the most.
What we learned
As this is our first time working together as a formal group, we learned a lot about the ways certain members of the group work and how to utilize that to maximize efficiency and create a great end result.
What's next for Tea-Rexes
We are planning on staying together as a group and, since a lot of us are seniors, mentoring the next group from our school to compete in this competition. The majority of the senior members are also planning on majoring in Computer Science to follow through with their interest and passion in the field.
