Inspiration
The inspiration for this application came from personal experiences of assisting in recovery efforts in the communities affected by hurricanes in Florida. One of the biggest problems that these organizations face is the influx of volunteers following a disaster. In order to fully mobilize and properly manage the community-based response, volunteer events require strategic planning and determining the needs of these communities and local hosting capacity before assigning volunteers for response efforts. However, in the case of unexpected emergencies and natural disasters, volunteers are needed immediately to assist those affected. Our app proposes a simple but practical solution for assigning tasks to volunteers during these high impact recovery periods.
Our Approach
- An immediate digital response via our progressive web application
- On-site access codes for volunteers to select their desired tasks
- Allow Coordinators to keep track of the number of volunteers working on each task and create new tasks if necessary
How we built it
Our project was built by:
- Figma to design an interactive prototype
- React for the frontend development
- Microsoft Azure for the backend development
Challenges we ran into
It was extremely difficult making a working app in 36 hours. Furthermore, none of us were extremely comfortable using React and we ran into many errors along the way.
Accomplishments that I'm proud of
We are extremely proud to be able to execute our idea and we believe that the app can make a real difference in disaster responses in the future.
What I learned
We pushed ourselves out of our comfort zones and learned how to use programs that none of us were really familiar with. It was our first time working with React as well as Microsoft Azure.
What's next for TaskMe
We are looking to expand our audience to schools and organizations. Please follow our repo on Github to see project updates.
