Inspiration
The inspiration came in light of the recent violent attack on Capitol Hill on January 7, 2021, and how misinformation can lead to deadly outcomes.
What it does
Our project educates users by providing keywords that indicate certain topics extracted from websites and provides scholarly articles from Google Scholar. This allows users to educate themselves about certain topics from credible and scientific sources rather than social media.
How we built it
We built a python script that conducts the back-end search. Figma was used to design the web app which was later made using Bootstrap. The web app contains a simple and embedded example of what the user could possibly see when using our website.
Challenges we ran into
We were mostly beginners with the technologies we were using, so this experience really required us to climb an extremely steep learning curve to create the final product.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
Although it was a steep learning curve that we had to climb, we still made it! There was a point in time where we thought we might not have anything to submit but we actually have a much more complete product than anticipated!
What we learned
We learned about design tools we never used before including Figma and also learned about the amount of research that must go into the tools and technologies required for misinformation prevention.
What's next for Tackle Your Bias
We hope that more features can be added once a solid link between all aspects of the project can be made. We also hope that this project at least encourages other developers to think about creating projects that can help people receive factual information on their feeds rather than rumours and lies that lead to deadly attacks.
