Inspiration

Tab chaos is real. We had 50+ tabs open while building this project. Finding that one documentation page from 3 hours ago? Impossible. Chrome's new Built-in AI APIs launched, and we thought: what if your browser could actually understand what's in your tabs and help you find stuff? No cloud, no privacy concerns - just local AI making sense of your digital mess.

What it does

TabWhisperer uses Chrome's Gemini Nano to analyze and manage your tabs locally. Ask it "Which tabs are about JavaScript?" and it searches through your actual open tabs. It categorizes tabs (Work, Study, Entertainment, etc.), finds duplicates, with smart clean up system suggests what to close, and can summarize content. Everything runs on-device - your data never leaves your browser.

How we built it

  • Chrome Built-in AI APIs (Prompt, Summarizer, LanguageModel)
  • Manifest V3 extension with service workers
  • Session pooling to reuse AI contexts (60% faster responses)
  • Intent detection for routing queries to specialized handlers
  • Tab tracking system monitoring usage patterns
  • Chrome storage API + in-memory caching

Challenges we ran into

The AI kept giving generic advice ("Try visiting MDN for JavaScript") instead of searching actual tabs. Fixed by injecting tab context directly into prompts. Also hit token limits with 50+ tabs - solved with smart pre-filtering. Chrome's AI sessions were buggy

Accomplishments that we're proud of

  • 100% local AI processing - complete privacy
  • Actually finds your tabs when you ask about them
  • Sub-second responses through session caching
  • Handles 50+ tabs without breaking
  • Real duplicate detection that works
    • Smart Categorization: Automatically groups tabs into Work, Shopping, Research, Entertainment, etc.
    • Content Summarization: Get instant AI summaries of any tab's content
    • Natural Language Q&A: Ask questions about your tabs in plain English
    • Smart Cleanup Suggestions* AI recommends which tabs to close or archive

What we learned

Chrome's local AI is surprisingly powerful

What's next for TabWhisperer

Voice command. Visual tab understandin,. Weekly browsing insights. Workflow automation ("close all shopping tabs except Amazon"). Research mode with citation extraction. The goal: make browsers actually smart about the content you're viewing.
