Inspiration
Tabletop Tales grew from the idea of turning an ordinary café into a doorway to a tiny, whimsical world. We wanted a space that initially felt warm, social, and familiar but revealed a humorous, fantastical twist the moment players approached the buffet table. Shrinking down into a miniature food adventure felt like the perfect way to combine comfort with surprise.
What it does
When players move close to the central table, they shrink and enter a food-themed obstacle course filled with oversized snacks and playful challenges. They hop across crackers, balance on wobbly jelly, and climb a multi-tiered cake.
How we built it
The world was created with a focus on readable visuals, smooth transitions, and simple but satisfying mechanics. Each element-movement paths, interactions and shrink triggers-was designed to be intuitive and accessible, especially for younger audiences.
Challenges we ran into
The biggest challenge was balancing clarity, scale, and performance within a short development window. Ensuring the shrinking mechanic felt seamless while keeping the café and obstacle course visually linked was also a core hurdle.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We successfully built a cozy social café that hides micro-adventures with clear interaction loops. The shrinking transition and food-based course came together in a way that feels both charming and easy to navigate.
What we learned
We learned how to design for younger players by prioritizing clarity, intuitive triggers, and tactile, easy-to-understand interactions. We also gained insight into blending social spaces with game moments in a compact environment.
What's next for Tabletop Tales
Future plans include expanding the obstacle course with more food-themed challenges and adding a gameplay of collecting chef hats along the obstacle course. We also plan to add a global leaderboard, introduce NPCs waitresses, and evolve the café into a hub where new seasonal or themed miniature worlds can appear over time like our current Christmas corner could be a place where players can shrink again and enjoy a winter mini-arena with snowball projectiles.
