Problem
Exploring different cultures can broaden our understanding of the world, but it can also be challenging to navigate. For many, the prospect of reaching out to people from other cultures can be intimidating. As one interviewee put it, "I'm curious about other people's cultural backgrounds, but Iām also afraid I'll accidentally offend someone. As a result, I don't usually even try to ask about different cultural experiences."
Given this obstacle, how might we design a digital platform that helps people navigate the complexities of cultural differences?
Solution
Table for 5 has two key components: food and a game. Food, as 4 / 4 of our interviewees mentioned, is a key part of culture. Sharing food is a commonality that can help people bond regardless of cultural background. It's also a great way to learn about the diversity of cultures within your community.
Our embedded game, "Pass the Salt,ā helps strangers navigate the intimidation of asking personal or sensitive questions about culture. Users share their experiences through a structured format, which makes them more comfortable and allows them to explore deeper topics and open up to others.
Overall, Table for 5 brings people from different backgrounds together through their shared love of food. The game component helps to facilitate difficult conversations and deeper understanding. By providing a comfortable and interactive environment, Table for 5 allows users to learn about and experience new cultures.
