Synapse

Synapses uses a suite of collectible-style of trading cards and tokens to allow users to translate their multifaceted, evolving identity into the virtual space while making networking more engaging.

Inspiration

Trading card games were a major inspiration for this project. Games like Pokemon inspired us to create a Pokemon-style professional networking app to inspire users' creativity called synapse, an app where users can showcase their professional identity through our extensive suite of badges that correspond to their skills, experiences, and other identifiers while pursuing the skills and domains that they would like to see their professional identities "evolve" into.

What it does

Synapse is a fun and engaging professional networking app that focuses on encouraging users to form meaningful connections. Synapse allows users to create a tradeable card of themselves listing their skills, bio, and past experiences and acquire basic badges through their skills or more advanced badges in our marketplace. They can then trade cards with other connections they make in real life, with the goal of collecting as comprehensive a deck as possible.

How we built it

We used vercel to build and deploy the app. In particular, we built the frontend using HTML/CSS and Express for backend. We also used MongoDB to keep our data and a .tech domain. We used Firebase to host our login using Google.

Challenges we ran into

Multiple of our team members got food poisoning, which was a challenge in getting started on our project. We also had an issue connecting to MongoDB.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We are proud that we overcame the challenges posed above, which limited the time and ability of our members to work through this project. However, we were able to overcome these challenges to create a product that we can be proud of.

What we learned

Through this project, we refined our technical skills in web-app building using MongoDB and Vercel. We also learned valuable skills in coding under time pressure and adapting to changing circumstances to create a full product despite initial setbacks.

What's next for Synapse

We hope to implement our badge feature next, where Users are encouraged to keep up with their connections through the badge trading feature, where they can trade badges with other users to acquire the badges they desire or acquire limited-edition badges. We also hope to implement the marketplace featuring in-store currency alongside it.
