The biggest inspiration behind this project was two of our group members’ personal experiences of being code instructors for young kids. As a result, they both worked extensively with scratch and wanted to make a kid-friendly game that taught them about sustainability.

The game’s aesthetic is heavily inspired by the game ‘Stardew Valley’ and ‘Backpack Battles’. Our game teaches young kids about the reality of everyday decisions being made that affect the environment.

As a result of trying to make this project palatable for the kids learning Scratch, we are proud to have pushed the limitations of the Scratch platform. We also learned about the versatility of the Scratch environment despite how rudimentary it is.

Additionally, we were pleased with the attention to detail with our custom 8-bit sprites. We purposely made the changes to the environment more drastic so that it is more noticeable to the players. Unlike the real world, negative impacts do not show up immediately so it is very easy to ignore the consequences of our actions. By making drastic changes a direct consequence of certain actions, it emphasizes how a player’s decisions can impact their world in the future.

In the future, we would hope to expand the game in a way that brings the ideals of sustainability into their real life. One idea that we had floated around was the possibility of making a game that could utilize augmented reality to track the progress of real-life plants for in-game rewards.
