Sustainability Tracker

Inspiration

The inspiration for this project came from when I was looking to purchase some products off of amazon, but I wasn’t sure how sustainable the company I would be supporting through my purchase was. To solve this, We created Sustainability Tracker!

What it does

Our app is a chrome extension that can be used on amazon.com products to search how sustainable the brand selling the product is. The user can use it anytime they plan to purchase a product, but aren't sure if their purchase will be environmentally beneficial.

How we built it

We built our project using HTML CSS and JS. Some notable features of our project is the sleek design, and use of AI.

Challenges we ran into

We were struggling with making API calls and gemini because we needed to run a server. In addition, it was our first time making a chrome extension so there was a very steep learning curve.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We are proud that we could get a functioning app that looks good. This app is genuinely useful because of the lack of transparency on company environmental policies, especially ones online.

What we learned

We learned the importance of setting realistic goals. Originally, our project was going to be much further developed, including a login system and leaderboards for users to compare how environmentally friendly their purchases are.

What's next for Sustainability Tracker

 1. Find better sources for information
 2. Expand to other retailers (I.E. Walmart)
 3. Add rewards for buying sustainable products
 4. Login system for cross device capabilities
 5. Upload to chrome webstore
