Inspiration

Our goal was not as simple as creating a standalone game or project. The group wanted to create something that could potentially have a substantial impact on users. We recognize that living sustainably is vital for the future of our society and hoped that this project could teach young children about the impacts of various environmental actions. Hopefully users will not just have fun whilst playing the game, but also be able to learn about what actions they can take to create a more sustainable future.

What it does

Climate Hero challenges users to make environmentally friendly decisions when faced with different scenarios and events. This game gives users credits (in-game currency) and allows them to spend these credits on various environmentally friendly actions. The actions bought impact the earth's happiness score which is later shown to the user. The user's goal is to get the Earth to a happiness score of 100, however a happiness score of 0 will result in a loss.

How we built it

We built this in Java using Swing.

Challenges we ran into

The most difficult problem we ran into was ensuring when a "next" or "back" button was clicked that the game would travel to the correct panel. The different game panels were not always in the same order, so this made finding the correct panel difficult.

What we learned

We learned that creating a GUI in Java was both tedious and time-consuming. Looking back, it may have been a better plan to use another language, however the group members were most familiar with Java.
