We have found that as busy college students it is difficult to find time to stay up-to-date with the immense amount of news. Even so, sometimes we can get stuck in filter bubbles by only reading one news source. We wanted to create a tool that can summarize news from various sources for popular news topics and is simple enough to be used by people of all ages.

Introducing your new favorite website... Gist

Select the news categories that you are interested in, press generate, and immerse yourself in your favorite news topics. Yes, it is that easy! Scroll through the articles and use the selection at the top to jump to a specific category. If you would like to read the full article, simply click on the title. Gist formats to both mobile and desktop browsers, and it is also accessible with a screenreader.

We know that you are probably wondering: What could possibly be added to Gist? Well, we could not include everything we wanted in a 36 hour hackathon, so here are some of our ideas:

  • Pull the news from more sources
  • Determine a ranking for the articles and have the best ones display first
  • Use Generative AI to summarize the articles rather than relying on the news source providing a summary
  • Use Generative AI to summarize all the articles for a given category
  • Let the user search instead of having pre-defined categories
