Inspiration
College students constantly need outfits for different events—formal nights, career fairs, cultural functions, game days—but buying new clothing every time is expensive and unsustainable. We noticed how common it is for friends to borrow outfits last-minute, and how chaotic it becomes to track who has whose clothes. We wanted a solution that promotes sustainability, builds community, and saves money.
What it does
StyleSync (StyleSwap) is a shared digital closet where students can: Upload their wardrobe and create a personal digital closet Add friends and view shared outfits Request to borrow specific items Post and browse outfit inspiration through a social feed Reduce unnecessary purchasing and encourage sustainable fashion consumption
How we built it
Frontend: React Native + Expo for iOS/Android compatibility Backend: Node.js + Express API with Firebase for authentication & real-time storage (Not yet fully implemented for demo purposes) Image handling: Integrations for uploading photos and optional receipt scanning
Challenges we ran into
Reverting changes from changes from Cursor that we disliked.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
Built a functional prototype Created a borrowing request flow with tracking and notifications Designed an easy to use interface
What we learned
The importance of writing out product specs before vibe coding (much faster iteration). Constant use of version control.
What's next for StyleSwap
Integrate Firebase and authentication for real-world usability. Launch a pilot program with student organizations and Greek life at UW-Madison. Launch student ambassador program. Long term expansion - launch at all the Big 10 Schools.
