Studykomos

💡 Inspiration

A lot of students in Indonesia tend to study one-way. They absorb materials from their teachers and their books and that's it. However that’s only a small way of learning, they can learn much more about the world and perhaps faster if they learn from their fellow peers. Furthermore, connecting with peers other than increasing your information, knowledge, and skills also opens collaboration. Maybe you never knew someone you met has the perfect skillset to jumpstart your business, etc.

💻 What it does

StudyKomo’s is a website to connect peers with one another. It is a platform for students to collaborate and learn from one another. With more than 30 different categories, students are able to explore a vast range of different subjects, meet new students and find new study buddies.

🔨 How we built it

Backend:

• Agora SDK
• Firebase auth

We used a software called Agora SDK which is used to host video calls/audio call sessions. We started by creating a project in it and gathering the temporary token, app id, and channel name. Using some javascript and the help of a youtube tutorial we were able to build a user friendly interface that has smooth video and audio. Through the use of Agora SDK users can :

Join a stream at will Toggle their camera on and off Toggle their mic on and off Leave a stream at will

Frontend:

• HTML & CSS
• Javascript for functionality

🧠 Challenges we ran into

• First using the Agora SDK, as its our first time using it. We had a lot of trouble positioning the cameras and ensuring the API worked
• For some reason the firebase SignUp suddenly didn't work eventhough we didn't change any code haha, but logging in works perfect

🏅 Accomplishments that we're proud of

• The main accomplishment that we’re all proud of as a group is the video call API working out. It was extremely hard to find either a tutorial that worked or one that wasn’t 3 hours long. But after finding out and pinpointing each other's mistakes while making it we finally made the video API work and I think as a group that is our main accomplishment that we are proud of.

• We’re also proud of how the design of the website came out to be. Mainly the background color as we all stumbled upon it while brainstorming over canva. It was out of pure luck that one of us stumbled on this amazing color that we all then agreed to finally set as our background color just because of how subtle yet well it fits in a website. The design also includes how the website’s structured as well as the entirety of css used in the website.

📖 What we learned

We learned a lot about collaboration skills as an entire group. Prior to this hackathon we all barely knew each other, but throughout this hackathon we have found each other's strengths and weaknesses and learnt to help each other. We were able to split the roles extremely efficiently which led to the creation of our product.

🚀 What's next for StudyKomos

Next for StudyKomos is to expand on what we already have, we plan to add a tutor system that will be locked behind a paywall but despite that will not hinder the 1 to 1 experience of students interacting with one another. We also plan to utilize the idea of group sessions instead of a 1 to 1 experience. Adding new features is also a plan such as sharing screen , a live chat as well as a whiteboard so students can help teach one another. StudyKomos has a long way to go from its starting point is what we all believe as a group, and we truly plan to build on this idea even after the hackathon as well all know the benefit of a study buddy and how it’s helped us to grow in our academics and only hope to spread it around the world.
