Inspiration

“Study a Latte” is an education-themed mobile app inspired by anime, lo-fi music, study cafes, and our own first-year university student experiences.

What it does

This app lets the user customize their own Pomodoro study technique by taking them through a virtual study cafe experience. It first asks them how long each of the 4 study sessions will be and then lets them choose how long each small break will be. Users can have some fun customizing their study session by choosing aesthetic drinks and pastries to “eat” while being productive. The app also has sections for an Instagram page where previous users have shared their successful study sessions and a music recommendations page for relaxing playlists.

How we built it

Our mobile app was designed and prototyped with Figma and the Timer plugin by Leonard Thomas.

Challenges we ran into

Some challenges we came across were incorporating a timer (which we resolved via the plugin) as well as inserting animated GIFs. Prototyping was also challenging as we had dozens of animations, which were tricky to organize. Figma’s ability to allow real-time collaboration helped our team communicate effectively, which helped us figure out how to prototype cohesively.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We are proud of creating a user-friendly and coherent design for our prototype on Figma in the time span of a day. We were able to effectively collaborate through online communication platforms such as Discord despite being in a virtual, isolated environment.

What we learned

We learned how to use Figma to design and prototype a mobile app. Building this app helped us learn about UI/UX design, such as wireframing and consistently using layout grids.

What's next for Study a Latte

For the future, Study a Latte hopes to implement a login interface to provide a more personalized experience for the user. Through their accounts, users will be able to track their study progress on the app which will unlock more menu items to interact with while they study. In addition, we hope to gain sponsorships from companies such as Starbucks to feature popular items from their menu on our array of drinks and desserts.
