Communication is a 2-way street, and what is education if not one of the most critical forms of communication? For students to learn effectively a professor needs to know how to communicate their curriculum. One aspect of this is student engagement. If students are not paying attention, how can they learn? There have been plenty of times in classes where our team has felt disengaged, whether that’s thinking about the craziness of life, the classroom is too warm, sleep deprivation, etc. and in times like these, we need a little extra support to absorb the class material. To alleviate this we created an engagement tracking system to help professors understand their class a little better. The computer vision portion of our system uses image captioning and sentiment analysis to update the professor with a numerical estimate of the class’s engagement in real-time. The Google extension of the system looks at the student's activity in the class and decides if the student is engaged. Both of the engagement data are added at the end so the professors can learn if the class is engaged or not.
