Inspiration

Navigating cities can be overwhelming, especially for people who are sensitive to noise, crowds, or visual stimulation. Most navigation tools optimize for speed, often pushing users through busy, chaotic environments without considering how the route feels. StreetWise was inspired by the idea that the calmest route is not always the fastest one, and that navigation tools should adapt to human sensory needs rather than forcing users to adapt to the city.

What it does

Street Wise is a sensory-aware routing tool that helps users find routes that feel calmer, not just shorter. Users enter a start and end location, adjust how much they care about brightness, noise, and crowds, and Street Wise evaluates multiple possible routes. The app analyzes nearby places along each route to estimate sensory load, selects the route with the lowest weighted score, and explains why that route was chosen.

How we built it

Used multiple APIs for data retrieval, route formations and scoring reasoning in our application!

Challenges we ran into

  • Obtaining the place data using Google Maps Platform API (how to implement into system)

What's next for streetWise

  • Having a text to audio feature for accessibility purposes
  • Adding in a section for scores for alternate routes to display why the selected is best
