Inspiration
Immigration is confusing, expensive, and full of uncertainty even for smart, organized people. We wanted to replace guesswork with a clear, step-by-step plan grounded in official sources.
What it does
Our project asks plain-English questions and builds a personalized immigration “roadmap” with next steps, required documents, and key deadlines. It also explains likely options and timelines with clear warnings when something is risky or unclear.
How we built it
We built a structured intake flow that turns user answers into a profile, then runs rules to map them to possible pathways. We layered an AI assistant on top to explain results in simple language and cite official government pages.
Challenges we ran into
Immigration rules have lots of edge cases, and we didn’t want the AI to confidently guess. We had to design strict guardrails so the tool says “I don’t know” and recommends a lawyer when needed.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We turned a messy, intimidating process into a clean visual plan that users can actually follow. We also made the system explain why it suggests something, not just what it suggests.
What we learned
People don’t just need answers. They need clarity, timelines, and decision points they can trust. The best AI here is careful, structured, and honest about uncertainty.
What's next for StatusMap
We want to add more pathways, smarter timeline predictions, and personalized checklists that prevent common mistakes. We also want to let users opt in to anonymous milestone sharing so timelines get more accurate over time.
