Inspiration

We were inspired by a friend of ours who was struggling in their first year of community college. He realized that he was spending too much time on his phone and wanted to purge all of his social media, but he never had anyone or anything to prevent him from doing so. He just needed a little external reinforcement to fix his habits. Our goal with StatCheck is to provide that tiny bit of reinforcement, getting the user to realize their own bad habits so they can adjust them accordingly.

What it does

StatCheck tracks your phone's screen time on specified apps, and every time one of those apps is opened, StatCheck will run a calculation based on the user's current grades, goals, and current daily screen time. If the app determines the user is using their phone too much beyond their preferences, it will send a notification prompting you to focus on your work. Our intention is to create a strong and firm notification that urges the user to focus on their work while not being too forceful.

How we built it

We built StatCheck through the Jotform app and form builder with the prototype being coded in Java. The logo was designed in Adobe Photoshop and the video was edited in Adobe Premiere Pro.

Challenges we ran into

The main challenge we ran into was switching development from a website to a mobile app. Originally, we thought that making a website would be easier, given that both of our team members were only novice coders. However, we realized that neither of us knew HTML, and by the time we had learned and figured it out, we came to the realization that the project would only really work as a mobile app. Throwing away have of our project with only a few hours left was heartbreaking, but it needed to be done for the betterment of our app.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

Despite the fact that our end product did not use any HTML, we are proud of the fact that in the short span of a few hours, we were able to learn the language well enough to prototype a website. We are also proud of the video presentation, as it took a lot of hard decisions and editing to cut it down to 3 minutes.

What we learned

As mentioned previously, we did learn HTML for this hackathon, as well as how to use the Jotform app and form builder, but we also learned how to work as a team. In particular, we learned how to use each other's specific skills and knowledge to get the project down.

What's next for StatCheck

While a majority of StatCheck is still in the prototype phase, we did draw plans for hypothetical expansion, particularly in creating more customization options so that users can truly control their screen time usage and monitoring. Unfortunately, for StatCheck to be fully functional and running, both of our team members would need more computer science knowledge than they currently have as well as connections to companies and websites, specifically Canvas. However, we hope to continue the project eventually.
