Inspiration
We were inspired by games like Karlson, Ghost Runner, Star Wars: The Old Republic, and Ultrakill for game style. We also wanted to add an early PlayStation graphic theme to the project. For the game story, we were inspired by sci-fi stories with a pirate twist. Some examples were Treasure Planet and Star Wars.
What it does
The game is a first-person shooter. You are a space pirate, trying to seize control of an enemy starship, but you find yourself battling swarms of enemy robots, and...are those crates moving on their own?! Something seems slightly off, even unreal, about this ship.
How we built it
We built the game in the Unity engine with C# scripting, and we used Git and GitHub for version control and to facilitate collaboration.
Challenges we ran into
We ran into some challenges with collaboration due to issues with Unity's built-in version control, but we solved this by switching to Git and Github instead. Aurora ran into the challenge of missing a few rather obvious bugs in the code for an hour due to not having time to sleep. Andrew ran into game performance issues which took him two hours to fix. Also, Malaysia had some difficulty when it came to the visual design of the project. It was difficult to find a steampunk-themed spaceship that fit the color palette of the game cover.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We are proud of how fast we were able to flesh out a story and create the game prototype. Malaysia was also happy with how her visual design came out.
What we learned
Working on this project, we learned multiple new skills. Aurora learned how to program better using C# in Unity and Github. Andrew learned that time management is really important and getting proper sleep. Malaysia learned how to use Canva to design the visual aspects of the project.
What's next for Starbound Scallywag
We plan to continue to work out the gaming errors and add some more story details during our free time.
