Inspiration

Spooky Styles was inspired by the real challenge people face when buying wigs and hair accessories online. Most customers struggle to imagine how a style will actually look on them before purchasing. I wanted to eliminate that uncertainty and create an interactive, fun, and practical way for users to try different wigs virtually. The goal was to blend beauty, technology, and convenience into one experience that feels personal and engaging.

What it does

Spooky Styles is an AR-powered wig store that allows users to try on different wig styles in real time using their camera or by uploading a photo. The platform is designed to help users make confident buying decisions while enjoying an immersive and playful experience.

How we built it

The project was developed using AI-generated wig assets, facial detection technology, and an AR overlay system to place wigs naturally on the user’s head. A collection of wig styles was created using detailed image generation prompts. The system aligns the selected wig with the user’s head shape and movement, allowing for a realistic try-on effect. A simple user interface allows easy browsing and selection of different wigs.

Challenges we ran into

One of the main challenges was handling different natural hairstyles, especially when the user’s current hair is big or voluminous. This made the wig alignment less accurate in some cases. Lighting differences in user environments also affected the realism of the overlays. Another challenge was ensuring the wigs looked natural across different skin tones, face shapes, and head angles.

Accomplishments that we’re proud of

We successfully created a working AR try-on experience that responds in real time. A diverse range of wigs, including styles for women and men of different backgrounds, was generated and integrated into the platform. The visual quality of the wigs and the overall user experience showed that the concept is viable and has strong market potential.

What we learned

We learned that realism in AR requires more than just good images. Lighting, head tracking, and hairline blending make a big difference. We also realised that giving users some control, such as starting with a “clean” or simplified head view before trying wigs on, can significantly improve results. Most importantly, we learned that this is a highly valuable solution with real commercial demand.

What’s next for Spooky Styles

Next, the focus will be on improving the hair fitting accuracy, introducing more wig categories, and adding features like personalised recommendations and social sharing. We also plan to integrate an e-commerce checkout, influencer collaborations, and a mobile-first experience to attract a wider audience and drive sales.
