What it does
It works as a normal vintage phone but with a spooky twist. It is connected to a haunted phone exchange. You can dial numbers and your calls will be directed to the number you dialed. Scary voices might respond, so dial if you dare.
How we built it
Using a Raspberry Pi as the phone exchange. We used Python to listen to events such as user picks up the handset, and the user starts dialling a number.
To know which number the user has dialled, we counted the pulses coming from the phone dial. Based on the number that the user has dialled, we redirect the call to the correct voice.
Challenges we ran into
- Finding an original 1970s phone that works
- Getting familiar with Raspberry Pi
- To make the phone bell ring, the bell expects AC power from the phone exchange with high voltage. To circumvent this, we had to be creative and use a mini motor shield, connecting it to the bell so it isolates the polarity quickly and makes a noise.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
- Collaborating on a creative project and make something cool
What we learned
- How old phones work
