Inspiration

Many children struggle with speech development, but therapy is often infrequent and expensive. We wanted to create a solution that allows kids to practice anytime, building confidence and skill, while supporting speech pathologists in their work.

What it does

Speech Buddy acts as a digital speech companion bridging the gap between therapy sessions. It is an AI-powered platform where children:

  • Listen, repeat, and get real-time pronunciation feedback
  • Practice sounds, words, and sentences with structured exercises
  • Track progress automatically, helping both kids and parents see improvement
  • Learn safely, with child privacy and parental controls

How we built it

  • ✔ Frontend: Child-friendly, colorful UI with easy-to-use controls
  • ✔ AI: Speech recognition for children, phoneme-level analysis, and feedback generation
  • ✔ Backend: Progress tracker, exercises storage, multiple accents support
  • ✔ Features: Structured exercises, AI feedback, progress tracking, parental dashboards

Challenges we ran into

  • ꩜ Integrating AI to accurately recognize children’s speech
  • ꩜ Ensuring privacy and parental control compliance
  • ꩜ Balancing fun and educational factors in exercises

Accomplishments that we're proud of

  • ✦ Built a working prototype with real-time AI feedback
  • ✦ Designed bright, kid-friendly user interface
  • ✦ Developed structured exercises and progress tracking
  • ✦ Ensured privacy-first approach with parental controls

What we learned

  • ✿ Children need immediate, simple feedback to stay engaged.
  • ✿ AI speech recognition for kids is more challenging than adult speech.
  • ✿ User testing is essential to making a friendly interface.
  • ✿A platform like this can truly empower kids and parents.

What's next for Speech Buddy
