Intuitive furniture assembly in XR

Spatial Guide employs mixed reality (MR) technology to rethink or considerably enhance furniture assembly. By utilising mixed reality, users can visualize step-by-step build instructions projected directly within their space with seamless integration with the furniture components.

The system provides precise visual overlays showing how parts align, fit, and connect, eliminating the need to decipher complex diagrams. Interactive prompts guide users through each stage, with voice commands & the ability to toggle hand-tracking features, ensuring accuracy and reducing frustration. Overall, this approach bridges the gap between digital instruction and physical objects, creating an intuitive, user-friendly experience that saves time, minimises errors, and enhances satisfaction.

The idea for Spatial Guide was formulated whilst moving house and came to me when breaking down and reassembling furniture.

What it does

Provides concise, real world scale, instructional guidance non obtrusively within your space. You can choose the product that you wish to build and will be presented with a 3D representation and product layout map. Simply using your hands and voice you are are guided step by step from start to finish.

How I built it

The build was ideated utilising 3D (cinema4D) and Figma. I worked pretty fast within the first few weeks to layout out the idea and the rest came naturally. Once I felt the idea was solid I moved into Unity to test the interactions before then focusing on structure with a solid onboarding process that educated on the interactions needed to fulfil the experience as well as provide an overview of what it is.

Challenges I ran into

One of the biggest challenges for me was the voice recognition. I had a hard time trying to get this to work but eventually found a solution I was happy with.

Accomplishments that i’m proud of

The whole experience really. Everything came thick and fast since the initial ideation but aside from the whole prototype there was some interactions that provided troublesome but left me excited when they become functional.

What I learned

Physically; Working at real world scale not only got me excited but made me realise the huge potential XR has on everyday experiences.

Technically; exploring unique ways in which I can make the user feel more comfortable within an experience via interaction and careful thought.

What's next for Spatial Guide

I’ve already started thinking how this can grow. It’s a useful tool that genuinely works! This would make life easier for a lot of people.
