As college students and club members, we personally experienced the frustration of the complicated room registration system at our colleges. The current system causes students to miss out on available spaces, misunderstand room availability, or even end up with double bookings. We want to make the process more accessible and efficient for ourselves and everyone. Thus, we create the mobile application Spacy. Spacy addresses the problem by streamlining the booking process, providing a clear overview of available spaces, and allowing students to collaborate with others to book larger spaces or coordinate schedules. By simplifying the room registration system, Spacy aims to reduce stress and confusion for students and improve their overall experience with the college.
We started the project by creating a user persona and user journey. After identifying the targeted user's pain points and goals, we defined the problems within the current room registration system. Then, we diverged and converged, brainstorming ideas and settling on a list of the most necessary and critical ones. Next, we created wireframes of our application's screens and user flows. This step helps us map out the user interface and ensure that users can easily navigate the application. Using Figma, we designed our user interface by choosing color schemes, typography, and iconography that aligned with the fun and simple theme of Spacy. Finally, we tested our application for functionality and usability. And we gathered feedback from our friends and finished the final optimization.
In this exciting and challenging designathon, we sharpened our skills using Figma and acquired time management and teamwork skills. Recognizing the limitations of time, we set deadlines and prioritized tasks. However, we still needed more time toward the end. Holding different ideas about the emphasis on certain aspects of the application, we debated about whether to create new screens or improve existing screens. We realized our common goal is to deliver an accessible and user-centered application. Thus, we decided to explain our rationales clearly and listen to each other carefully. Ultimately, I recognized the necessity of improving the already-existed and gave up my original approaches. In this project, we understood that there is no winner within the team. To successfully deliver the project, everyone has to be good listeners and work toward the same goal. More importantly, we learned to enjoy the "view" along the journey, collaborating with talented and same-minded people, acquiring new skills, and creating the solution to solve a real-world problem.
