Inspiration
The inspiration for our project came from the lack of consolidation regarding space information. With the advent of new information in possibly every subject, it is very hard to find information about a specific topic in one place.
As a result of this lack of information, people are unable to understand the complexities of the universe. With recent developments in space travel and human space technology, humanity should be well-educated on possible frontiers within the universe.
Enter, social media! Social media is pervasive in society today. Why not make a social media based education platform that is game-based? Our aim is to turn the process of education into a fun game. We want to incentivize learning about humanity's future in space by rewarding users that help spread knowledge.
What it does
Spaceverse is a novel space-based education software. Simply put, it is a knowledge sharing platform, combining the services of Instagram with Google, Facebook with YouTube, and so forth. The goal of Spaceverse is to educate the community about the universe by consolidating information from news websites, allowing users to contribute information by creating videos/websites, and gamifying the process of learning.
How we built it
Our website consists of a frontend and backend. Our frontend is developed off of React and TailwindCSS. Our backend is built off of Express and integrated through MongoDB. It is then deployed through a server and hosted on a domain we got from domain.com (thespaceverse.tech). In order to extend our audience, we decided to professionalize our website by making it more user-friendly for people of all ages.
Challenges we ran into
We had several challenges come up along the way but the biggest one was coming up with our idea. We spent almost 1 to 2 hours trying to come up with an idea and hash out the details. Along the way though, encountered minor challenges. We initially had difficulty integrating the frontend with the backend. We also had issues deploying our website to the server. However, in the end, we were successfully able to tackle our challenges.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
Competing at a hackathon is a big deal! Being high school juniors (TAMS student) and demoing at a hackathon is an even bigger deal! We can proudly say that we came up with a really nice idea and mostly finished our project.
What we learned
Each one of our members learned something specific at this hackathon. All of us have previous experience coding, but we decided to take new technologies to expand our learning horizon. For example, Pranav and Daniel used React for the first time; this was James' first hackathon; and Dhruv experimented with MongoDB and Express for his first time.
What's next for Spaceverse
We plan on making our product largescale and scaling it up. We want to implement a leaderboard system, more tags, and add a comments/discussion section. Also, we want to make our product more hybrid by catering it to desktop and mobile users. We want to improve on our features and actually make this product a reality. Hopefully, we can get new employees to help us with work and sponsors along the way to provide us money. Eventually, our goal is to just make the world a more educated place so that people will be able to understand humanity's frontiers in space.
How to access Spaceverse
In order to access Spaceverse, you must use VPN or Hotspot because UNT wifi blocks our service. Spaceverse works on Mobile and Desktop and can run anywhere unless it isn't blocked (because of domain restrictions).
