Inspiration
Space Trails was greatly inspired by the classic game, The Oregon Trail. Different from The Oregon Trail, Space Trails, is set in space, where a group of survivors attempt to journey to the distant planet Pluto.
What it does
The objective of this game is to survive and reach Pluto with as many people as possible. The player will make choices every day of whether to scavenge, heal, travel, or rest. Based on these choices the game will proceed.
How we built it
We built it utilizing Javascript, HTML, and CSS. We also used Python and attempted to launch the AI chatbot through Flask and Herokuapp.
Challenges we ran into
One of our challenges was integrating our game and AI chatbot onto our website spacetrails.net. We were unsuccessful in launching the app globally through the Heroku app with Flask. However, we were able to run it locally.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We are proud of finishing this project and completing our first game in JavaScript. We never had much experience with different javascript frameworks and had to learn everything along the way. We were also able to simulate a language model based on models on character.ai
What we learned
During this Hackathon, we learned how to create and set up an AI chatbot. We also learned Javascript, CSS, and HTML to set up our Space Trails game. We also learned how to launch HTML projects on the web through GitHub.
What's next for Space Trails
We plan to further develop the game by adding more checkpoints and events, such as alien attacks. For the AI, we plan on improving the runtime, since it is currently pretty slow.
