"SoulSupport" - Nurturing Resilience through Connection

Our "SoulSupport" journey began as four college students from diverse majors: computer science, computer engineering, and even chemical engineering. None of us had experience in creating web apps, but we were united by a shared goal—to foster mental health resilience among college students.

The Inspiration

Our inspiration for "SoulSupport" was deeply rooted in the strong sense of community within our SASE (Society of Asian Scientists and Engineers) chapter. We had experienced firsthand the power of a family system that promoted unity and provided mentors to guide students in their academic and career endeavors. Recognizing the importance of community, we saw an opportunity to extend this concept to mental health.

As students from diverse academic backgrounds, we understood that college life presented unique mental health challenges. Our project, "SoulSupport," aimed to create a similar sense of community, a family, for students to work on their mental health alongside their peers. It was our way of fostering resilience through shared experiences and support, just as our SASE chapter had done for academic and professional growth.

The Learning Curve

None of us were familiar with web app development, but we were determined to learn. We tackled React, MongoDB, and Flask head-on, embracing challenges as opportunities to grow. Through coding, we discovered the potential to make a meaningful impact on the lives of our peers and address pressing societal issues.

How We Built "SoulSupport"

Our project, "SoulSupport," was a labor of love and collaboration. We set out to create a web app that could guide college students on a path to mental health resilience. We designed a personalized mental health quiz, matched users with supportive 'SoulFamilies,' and fostered a safe space for discussions and mutual empowerment. Our diverse skills in programming, design, and data analysis converged to bring our vision to life.

One memorable aspect of our journey was the unwavering dedication of one member who, after finishing a part-time shift at 5 a.m., would join our early morning coding sessions, highlighting our commitment to the project's mission.

Challenges We Faced

Our journey with "SoulSupport" was not without its share of challenges. Initially, we had a different vision for our project. However, time constraints forced us to reevaluate our approach. We made the tough decision to scrap our initial idea completely.

Starting from square one was both daunting and exhilarating. We embarked on a journey of research, exploration, and learning. We had to figure out how to set up the API, create and manage a database, and develop a user-friendly interface using React. Learning to code in Flask, React, and MongoDB from scratch was a significant undertaking.

The process of setting up an API and connecting it to a database was a complex puzzle. Each of us had to become proficient in various technologies and programming languages to bring "SoulSupport" to life.

Despite these initial setbacks and the steep learning curve, we embraced the challenge. It was a testament to our determination and belief in the project's mission. Our ability to adapt, learn quickly, and overcome obstacles ultimately led to the successful creation of "SoulSupport."

Closing Remarks

"SoulSupport" stands as a testament to our collective passion for fostering mental health resilience among college students. It embodies our belief that technology can bridge gaps and create communities of support. Our project continues to evolve, offering a lifeline to those navigating the complexities of college life.

As we reflect on our project journey, we recognize that "SoulSupport" is not just a web app; it's a space where college students can connect, grow, and thrive. We invite others to join us on this journey, as we continue to break the stigma surrounding mental health and nurture resilience, one connection at a time.
