Inspiration

I've been using an app for productivity and motivation, and it's been working well for me. It's helped me maintain good habits and be more consistent with my weekly tasks. Therefore, I can see how great it can be used in a similar fashion with eco-friendly tasks. I see a lot of potential and how it can motivate some people who normally won't care about sustainability by incentivizing them not only with in-game items and prizes, but also real-life rewards. It's innovative in that fun mini games and educational trivia games are built into it, as well as organizing real life clean-up workshops and community meet-ups to provide a safe space for people to share unique ways they have done to help the environment and make new friends.

What it does

Soul Eco (a play on the word, "so"; Sooo Eco) gamifies eco-friendly tasks and goals such as recycle, reduce, reuse, and transport by using classic RPG style elements. Each task completed will give gold leaves which are experience points that can be redeemed for real life prizes. Each category will have a list of tasks related to it. For example, in the reuse category, a task can be 'Bring your own reusable bag when grocery shopping'. In the transport category, a task can be 'Carpool with your co-workers to work'.

How we built it

We used Figma to create the layout of the app pages and designed the user interfaces. My teammate, Albert did most of the illustrations (character design, background), and my other teammate Michael just brainstormed and provided ideas such as partnering up with local small businesses for the real-life rewards. I came up with the idea and did most of the work in Figma. I will use Python & Xcodes to put the codes in.

Challenges we ran into

Not having enough time was a challenge, I was really hoping to be able to at least code one page, but there just wasn't enough time. My charger wasn't working for some reason and my laptop died. Another challenge was not really knowing how to even start the project, but I think I just went straight in and did my best.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We were able to get a lot done in a really short amount of time and all three of us had just met. I think putting three people together who have never met before with different personalities and backgrounds, and being able to get along well, and the ability to contribute our individual strengths is impressive. We are also proud that we were able to execute our ideas and make it into something tangible.

What we learned

We learned that making an app takes time and a team. We also learned that sometimes we have to learn things on the go and some things have to be learned fast which is very applicable in the real world. Also, we learned that we each have our own unique abilities and when we combine them, we can do just about anything.

What's next for Soul Eco

The next step for Soul Eco is to use Python to put codes in and anything else that is required to make it fully functional. I will let my friends and teachers play with it, test it, and get their feedback. Then, we will fix it, improve it, and then finally launch in the app store for IOS devices. In the future, it can be launched for Android devices too.
