Inspiration
Many people want to switch to renewable energy, but the information available is confusing, overwhelming, or contradictory. We wanted to create a solution that makes clean energy accessible and understandable for everyday households, so anyone can take action to reduce their carbon footprint.
What it does
SolarScore is a simple tool where users enter their home address and receive personalized, unbiased insights about adopting renewable energy. It shows things like cost savings, carbon reduction, or even the equivalent number of trees planted, helping users make informed decisions about solar and, eventually, other renewable options.
How we built it
We leveraged Ultralytics YOLO for real-time object detection and image segmentation, taking advantage of its cutting-edge deep learning and computer vision capabilities. YOLO offers exceptional speed and accuracy, working perfectly for our intuitive and easy-to-use website. Our interface guides users through complex information, turning raw data into clear, actionable insights that anyone can understand and act upon.
Challenges we ran into
With most of the team as beginners who are very new to coding, it was a struggle to design a functional front and backend.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We successfully built a functional platform that can deliver clear, actionable insights to users. We also created a foundation for scaling to other renewable energy options, communities, and even businesses, showing that SolarScore can make a real impact on adoption of clean energy.
What we learned
We learned a lot about data-driven design, user experience, and simplifying complex information. We also gained insight into how people interact with sustainability tools and how to communicate impact in ways that resonate with everyday users.
What's next for SolarScore
We plan to expand beyond solar to include wind, hydro, and other renewable energy options to optimize the best locations for infrastructure projects. We also aim to scale from individual households to schools, businesses, and entire communities, ultimately making SolarScore accessible worldwide and helping more people make the switch to clean energy.
