  Making a sustainable app

Inspiration

We were inspired by social media apps such as BeReal and Instagram. We thought the idea of influence had a strong ability to increase sustainability. A sustainable world is in the hands of the people, but if they do not care enough, it does not get done. We thought solarCore would provide a good incentive for people to be more thoughtful about the environment.

What it does

This is a social media platform where people can join competitions, go to events, and look at news regarding the environment. It also provides them a figure to see their carbon footprint, called rays. The more rays you have, the more sustainable choices you have made. This is determined by your participation in competitions, and sustainable feed you post.

How we built it

We built it using react native.

Challenges we ran into

We were just learning react native so it was a painstaking process getting used to the syntax, constantly searching for how to do things, and having no clue how to debug many things.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We are proud that we were able to come out with something when we did not know react native before hand. We wanted to challenge ourselves and have fun, and that is exactly what we did.

What we learned

We learned an entirely new framework to us and how to push through in tough situations.

What's next for solarCore

We hope that we can continue to develop this project. We want to see what specific events we can do like charities, and competitions that may be worldwide.
