Inspiration

Our project was inspired by the urgent need to combat climate change. As the demand for sustainable energy rises, solar power is becoming increasingly popular thanks to advancements in photovoltaic technology. We aim to contribute to the growth of this industry and help create a more sustainable world.

What it does

Our project features an interactive map that analyzes the potential for solar power usage across various regions of the world by examining solar radiance data. This tool helps identify optimal locations for solar energy deployment, promoting the growth of sustainable energy solutions.

How we built it

We used Leaflet to create an interactive map. When the user highlights a certain area on the map, the Python backend will fetch solar irradiance data in that region in the past year. Solar irradiance data is the measure of how much power each unit of land receives from the sun. This means that the higher the solar irradiance in that area, the more efficient solar panels there would be. Using this tool, we rated the selected area's potential for solar power usage on a scale of 1-5.

Challenges we ran into

  1. Sharing files on github
  2. Finding datasets for solar irradiation
  3. Merging different styles of css

Accomplishments that we're proud of

  1. Creative idea
  2. Implementation of interactive components

What we learned

  1. Full stack development
  2. Implement AI backend to a website

What's next for Solar Power Potential Interactive Map

  1. Creating a feature to estimate cost of solar panel projects
  2. Create estimations for other sources of sustainable energy
