Inspiration
A decrease in daylight hours in winter causes a decrease in serotonin levels and an increase in melatonin production. Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD), informally called ‘Seasonal Depression’, affects both highschool and university students during winter. Symptoms include trouble focusing, fatigue and oversleeping, making SAD more likely to get in the way of schoolwork for many students.
What it does
SnowdyDay aims to foster a sense of togetherness and combat seasonal blues. Upon logging in, users are greeted with a user-friendly dashboard that provides an overview of the study groups that the user has registered for. When users enter a study group, they have access to their personal timer, the group's collective timer and the Snowman. The user's study time, measured using the personal timer, can be added to the collective timer. The longer the group spends time studying together, the warmer it gets! The Snowman can melt or revive based on the group's collective study time.
How we built it
JavaScript, HTML, CSS, Django, Firebase
Challenges we ran into
Setting up the user database was the biggest challenge we ran into.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
- Login and registration logic implemented using Firebase
- User-friendly interface
What we learned
- Learning new technologies in a short period of time
- Time management skills
- Organizational skills: dividing tasks efficiently, defining concrete action items for task
What's next for SnowdyDay
We'd like to make a Chrome extension for SnowdyDay, and hopefully make our project more accessible to students. We'd also like to refine our user database logic.
