Inspiration
Our project began by exploring what a “sustainable lifestyle” truly means. Using Manus.ai for initial research, we discovered that one of the most overlooked aspects of sustainability is food waste. This insight inspired us to design SnapDish, an AI-powered app that helps users reduce waste while encouraging culinary creativity. Ever stared into your fridge and wondered, “What can I make with these ingredients?” SnapDish solves that problem. By simply taking a photo of your groceries, the app identifies what you have, tracks freshness, and generates personalized recipes based on your ingredients and dietary preferences—so you’ll never have to toss out forgotten produce again.
What it does
SnapDish is an AI-powered kitchen companion that helps you track your groceries, prevent food waste, and create personalized recipes from what’s already in your fridge.
How I built it
We built our prototype using Figma and Lovable, focusing on creating a user flow and clean visual design. Our process involved balancing functionality and aesthetic appeal, ensuring that SnapDish could feel both intelligent, easy to use, and share with your friends and family.
Challenges I ran into
Some of the main challenges we faced included working within the limitations of AI tools while learning the strengths of the AI. Lovable was a powerful tool for translating our Figma designs into interactive prototypes, though we encountered some constraints with exports and complex layouts. These experiences taught us how crucial it is to craft clear, detailed prompts and to balance ambition with feasibility when integrating emerging technologies into product design.
Accomplishments that I'm proud of
We’re especially grateful to Manus.ai for helping shape our project’s direction. It served as a brainstorming partner, guiding our early exploration of what “sustainability” could mean in a digital context and what it means to us. Its ability to organize and refine our initial thoughts gave us the clarity to focus on solving a real-world problem, food waste, through a snap of your dish.
What I learned
This project taught us that the greatest leverage point for tackling the $408 billion food waste crisis in the US lies in changing household behavior, and that AI is the essential tool to enable this change. By designing SnapDish, we validated that a low-friction interface, using AI for instant photo-to-inventory tracking and personalized recipe generation, can transform the tedious task of food management into an effortless, personalized, and rewarding experience.
What's next for SnapDish.AI
The statistics on food waste paint a clear and urgent picture: we are facing a global crisis of inefficiency with significant and far-reaching consequences. The United States, in particular, demonstrates a staggering level of waste, with nearly 40% of its food supply going uneaten. While there is growing awareness and some progress has been made in policy and technology, the overall trends show that waste levels remain stubbornly high. The data strongly suggests that household behavior is a critical leverage point for change. The immense amount of food discarded due to confusion over expiration dates highlights a clear need for standardized and simplified date labeling. Furthermore, the temporary reduction in food waste observed during the COVID-19 pandemic demonstrates that when circumstances necessitate more mindful consumption, significant improvements are possible. Addressing the food waste crisis requires a multi-pronged approach. This includes continued consumer education, supportive public policies, and the adoption of innovative technologies that help both businesses and individuals better manage their food resources. By tackling this issue, we can not only reduce economic losses and mitigate environmental damage but also take a significant step toward ensuring food security for all.
