Inspiration

Most people are familiar with the problem of organizing their groceries in a modern manner. There are several apps with digital shopping lists as well as tracker for your food supplies at home. We wanted to use a new approach to make the life of our customers even more simple. Also we were inspired to develop an application in honor of Bronko, the glorious dinosaur.

What it does

With our app the user is able to scan or take a photo of a bill they received at a grocery store. AI is then used to extract the text from the image and add it to the "virtual fridge/storage room". Another feature is the possibility to set threshold values for the amount of an item i.e. if the user always want to have 3 packs of noodles at home and the amount packs drop below that desired amount, noodles will automatically added to the shopping list.

How we built it

In general the app was developed using the flutter framework. For reading the bills we used Google OCR (Optical Character Recognition). The photos are transmitted to the Backend (cloud) and processed there to avoid load on the end device.

Challenges we ran into

It took us a long time to install all the required programs and packages to run Flutter on the desired IDE which initially dampened our motivation but after we took a quick break we were back on track. Since we only had one person with experience in Flutter in the team, the majority had trouble getting into Flutter the environment. We tackled the problem with a lot of reading articles and AI helping us out.

Fun is the most important thing in the end. Bronko is our king.

What's next for SMS

This project can be expanded pretty much indefinitely. One idea which came to mind was the addition of recipes in way that the ingredients get added to the shopping list. To achieve this an API from a big cooking website could be used. Another aspect is shifting the focus from just food to small garages and work places where different parts are required to assemble a product.
