MLH Hackathon: Winter Hacklympics, Fall 2020
Inspiration
This hackathon, we were inspired by the theme to make an infinite scroller involving a skier, a slope, and obstacles in the skier's way. Additional time left over for us meant adding even more powerups and aspects to the game, which was a bonus. Our main inspiration and standard to look up to was the old 2000's Powerpuff Girls game "The Fast and the Flurrious".
What It Does
Slippery Slope is an infinite scroller in which the user controls a character using the arrow keys. The goal is to avoid any obstacles in your path and collect snowflakes to earn points. The longer the skier isn't wiped out, the higher your score becomes!
How We Built It
This hack was built using HTML, CSS, and JavaScript for the controls, functionality, and sprite positioning of the game. The art assets were borrowed from online, as well as made in Scratch.
Challenges We Ran Into
As the group had not made this sort of game (and, for a majority of the team, had never made games at all!), we had a bit of trouble getting started with the hack. However, through several tutorials and much editing, debugging, and suffering over different timezones, we were able to come up with something pretty neat. Unfortunately, we had issues towards the end with image sprites, which we plan to adjust after the hackathon itself.
Accomplishments That We're Proud Of
We are proud to have completed a working game. Additionally, we have several assets we could use to ensure a great user interface and visual display of the hack, itself.
What We Learned
The team learned to work with JavaScript to create different visual effects that mimic an infinite scroller, as well as what it takes to get a game made. Point-based systems, collision effects, and all!
What's Next for Slippery Slope
In the future, we plan to add more player skins to choose from, the option of a skier or snowboarder or other winter sport to work with, and even more obstacles. We also plan to add different objects to collect, as well as add in some powerups to give our game more functionality.
