Inspiration

While calendars, reminder, and navigation apps are very helpful, we thought something that contained all those in one interface while also giving more information on how to go about our days would be ideal.

What it does

It starts out with showing the weather forecast and Slate the dog giving encouraging words to start your day. Then, you could create a "day" where you're allowed to put in your stops at certain locations and the app should give back information about arrival time, traffic, etc.

How we built it

We started basic, by creating a home screen where the weather could be displayed and the option to look at old days, or create a new one. We also used firebase to include a database where we could keep track of previous days so the user could get inspired or go on about planning their day easier.

Challenges we ran into

As this was our first time using react-native and building an iOS app from ground up, there were many issues such as setup. Of course, learning the language and architecture itself was definitely another challenge.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

Getting an actual app up and running along with features such as being able to obtain information about locations through coordinates and even being able to add in navigation between cards in our app.

What we learned

How to structure when creating an app. Making sure we have the right tools and they're in our domain with the skills we have are very important. However, it's fine to work with something unfamiliar as 24-48 hours is a long time to pick up something.

What's next for Slate

We hope to show routes/arrival times for stops and implement more actual user inputted information.

This was my first time experimenting with mobile development. Although I was unfamiliar with React Native, I was still familiar with React as a framework, the frontend of an application, and the backend of an application. I worked on gathering data from the Google Maps APIs and OpenWeatherMap API, then manipulating that data for use in reusable components as props I created then beautified the components and finally worked on putting the application together.

I worked on navigation, styling out components, and setting up a database to hold information. This was my first time dealing with react-native and app development in general so it was definitely a learning experience.

I worked on all the graphics in the project, from the logos and icons to weather to the general layout and also worked on the UI of the app.
