Inspiration
Having non-English native speakers in my family, there are articles and news that use slang and is hard for them to understand. I would need to translate the meaning to them and this allows them to understand the meaning of certain slang words. Our objective is to create an environment between non-native and native speakers of their language by giving people the tools to learn about slang culture. Our Team here at Slango wants to help break that cultural barrier and promote inclusivity. We understand learning slang is important to integrating into any culture and is also associated with quick independent communication, sociolinguistic studies, identity in terms of the self, gender and sexual orientation, as well as breaking that barrier to create a better, safe, and inclusive community.
What it does
It is a chrome extension that allows any user to translate a word and give a more modern definition as well as translate figuratively.
How we built it
We built it using HTML, CSS, and Javascript.
Challenges we ran into
In the future, we want to have the chrome extension automatically detect slang words and allow the users to select it instead of them needing to select the word they want to translate.
Future improvements
We hope to improve Slango’s detection functionality, so that it only presents the definition of the word if the word is used in the context of slang. We also hope to extend Slango’s functionality to more languages.
