Inspiration
Inspiration came from cozy games and games in the survival-crafting genre. Social experiences with in world creation tools and gameplay like Growtopia, Terraria, and Minecraft. Emergent multiplayer experiences like in Dark Souls. Artistically and thematically inspired by Miyazaki films such as Castle in the Sky and Nausicaa. Alien biology from Scavenger's Reign.
What do you do?
Explore the expansive Skydew Islands inside your nimble Pathfinder Shell. Dash and glide with friends over the clouds, climb walls and trees, and zip up or down vines and ropes. Gather many kinds of resources both familiar and exotic. Break down sticks and stones into an atomic form as building blocks. Harness your creativity and create buildings using modular pieces of wood and stone. In Cozy Realms you can enter your Avatar Shell, embodying a giant masked Spirit that can freely build in mixed reality mode. And do all of this with your friends, or make new friends on your journey! Everything is made with multiplayer in mind and constantly connecting like minded players together.
How we built it
We used Unity for our client: to create the worlds and the procedural tech that goes into populating them. And Normcore and Firebase is used for our backend and networking layers
Challenges we ran into
Always optimization and resources. Finding the sweet spot of quality, performance, and completion. Finding a line on designing mechanics that are simple and social but also have elements of skill expression.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
Creating in editor pipelines that highly optimize and deliver content to builds that run at framerate. We use clayxel systems to create compelling in world content that gets run through a full pipeline based on the dead and buried approach to seamless open worlds for Quest level hardware.
What we learned
Scope creep is real. Finding the minimal path to fun and then building from there is the target always and keeping yourself honest on the path towards that a worthy challenge, especially when you are excited to explore all an emerging medium has to offer.
What's next for Skydew Islands
We are hoping to land our early access launch sometime in Q1 2026.
