Inspiration
Well, all of our members browse youtube often. And we often come across interesting videos. And recently, we came across a video that talked about the dark web and specifically, the silk road. The silk road is kind of like the Amazon of the dark web. And while thinking of an idea for HooHacks, we talked about how fun ! it would be to run a dark web empire. To run the largest business in the dark web.
So we decided to create a game that could do exactly that.

What it does
Skittles Road is a finance game that has the dark web as the setting. The overall end goal of this game is to start off with no money and to make a million dollars by running a skittles business. Yes ! Like the candy we all enjoy !
However, every action you do and your amount of money will affect your risk of getting caught by the FBI. So the player has to constantly be aware of this risk factor while making financial decisions.
There are 5 main areas in our game: Manufacturing, Technology, Maximizer, Statistics, and the Dark Web.
Maufacturing This is where all the skittles are manufactured. There are a total of 8 factories, and the player starts off with only one factory. They can invest money and buy factories and can also upgrade factories. This will overall increase the number of skittles generated per second.
Technology This is where you can upgrade your technology to progress further in the game. Investing money into technology will grant the user access to more elements of the game which will get more complex as the game progresses. You can also invest in improving the firewall, which directly results in a decrease of the risk. For investing in the firewall, you can either solve a hangman puzzle and pay a small sum of money or double the money and get the firewall upgrade without playing the game.
Maximization Our maximization tab is where the player wants to increase their demand as much as possible. There are three options here. One is to change the price of the skittles, usually lowering it to increase demand. Next is refining the skittle recipe (via taste, texture, and quality of ingredients) to produce higher quality skittles and therefore increase demand through quality control. And third, players can buy advertisements to increase their demand as well.
Statistics On our last company manager page is the statistics page, which gives us an overview of our statistics: profit, skittles made, risk, all per second.
The Dark Web In the latter half of the game, the user is introduced to dark web where they can trade crypto, a function we though important because of its use in the dark web because of its security and anonymity (btw the prices are real-time prices updated through an api!) buy upgrades from an online shop to increase production and demand, though of course since this is the dark web, there is some ambiguity in it. hire hitmen from the choco mafia to get rid of competitors and increase our own demand- and so to eventually expand to a monopoly.
Balance these sectors- demand, risk, growth, and competition to win the game ! (and get the legendary skittles recipe :) ).
How we built it
We built Skittles Road through Unity and working on separate scenes, combining them at the end. We found that while we ran into issues with overlapping changes sometimes, we were able to create such a massive game in such a short time frame because of the independence working in different scenes allowed us.
Challenges we ran into
Some Challenges we went through was that it was our first time trying to a make a big unity game, so there was a small learning curve. So, there was a lot to learn in a short amount of time. However, we were able to get past this curve and create a full game in the end !
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We are proud of being able to create a massive game like this is 24 hours !
What we learned
We learned the importance of sorting hierarchies and that many things can be possible in just a day!
What's next for skittles road
We hope to refine some of our graphics as well as expand the dark web portion of our game to be more interactive, as well as to flesh out a fuller storyline for the story.
