Inspiration

Resumes often don't paint the full picture of who you are. Condensed text means that your skills are limited to what you write on your resume. Not because you don't have the title means that you are not most of the way there. We wanted to help tell a more accurate story of your journey and skills

Inspiration struck when our members, in their finite wisdom, got addicted to Path of Exile. The Diablo-style skill tree provides an easy way for people to see your character's build. Why not apply the same format to yourself?

What it does

SkillTrail visualize your computer science skill and knowledge in a skill-tree like fashion. People can see how far in your web development journey you are, or how skilled you are in cybersecurity.

How we built it

We used vanilla HTML, CSS, and JavaScript. For the node graph, we used the vis,js JavaScript library.

Challenges we ran into

The first library we chose, React Flow, was powerful. However, it was also more complex and proved a bit too difficult for us to understand and use in 24 hours. We decided that some of our members will try to work out a solution while the other will find an alternative. In the end, we landed on vis.js which was friendlier to use while fulfilling all of our needs.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We overcame many technical challenges while having to work through the night. To learn a new library (and even relearning JavaScript) is a huge accomplishment for us. We are also proud of having made a very visual and interactive project that was front end heavy, when the majority of our members had little experience with front end.

What we learned

Other than learning the tools of our project, we also learnt to persevere in our lowest moments. If it wasn't for everyone's hard work, the project wouldn't be as polished as it is now. We learned to work together, back each others strength, and prioritize the important features

What's next for SkillTrail

We'd like to add more features such as user logins, improved graphs, importing resume, and the feature to share our skill tree.
