Inspiration

The inspiration behind SistaSquad comes from our own experiences in the gaming industry. We've all been there, playing a game online and feeling uncomfortable or unwelcome because of our gender or identity. It's frustrating, isolating, and frankly, it shouldn't be happening in this day and age. We wanted to create a platform where women and gender minorities could come together to create gaming teams without fear of harassment or discrimination.

What it does

SistaSquad is a platform that provides a safe and inclusive space for women and gender minorities to connect with others who share similar gaming interests. With SistaSquad, users can easily create an account, follow others, and set their own status to let others know what they are up to. Users can also list their interests and preferences, making it easy to find other gamers with similar tastes. With discussion boards covering a range of topics, users can connect with others and share their thoughts on everything from the latest game releases to the state of the industry. Whether you're looking for a casual gaming buddy or a dedicated squad to compete with, SistaSquad is the perfect place to find like-minded gamers and build a supportive community.

How we built it

We used React for the front-end and Python Django for the back-end. React allowed us to create a fast and user-friendly experience, while Django provided a powerful and secure framework. We combined these two technologies to make a platform that's both powerful and responsive.

Challenges we ran into

Decide on the technologies to use for building the core idea and determine how to leverage each team member's strengths effectively.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We are thrilled to have successfully brought our idea to life within just 24 hours. It's incredible to witness our vision transition from a mere concept to a tangible product in such a short span of time.

What we learned

During the development of SistaSquad, our team learned a lot about the importance of teamwork and collaboration. Each member of the team was able to contribute their unique skills and perspectives, which helped us to build a stronger and more well-rounded product.

We also had the opportunity to explore some new technologies, such as Django and libraries like @tanstack/react-query for handling API requests. This allowed us to expand our skill sets and learn about new tools that can be used in future projects.

Participating in a hackathon like WiCHacks 2023 was also a valuable learning experience. We were able to develop our project under time pressure and learn how to prioritize tasks to ensure that we met our goals within the given time frame. Additionally, the opportunity to receive feedback from judges and other participants helped us to identify areas where we could improve and continue to develop our skills.
