Inspiration
In life-threatening situations, communication is crucial for responding quickly and efficiently. However, there is a barrier for individuals with hearing/ speaking impairment to use these services. Although there is an emergency text relay service, a survey in 2019 showed that the Deaf community had a poor perception of health emergency services.
Also, there is an unmet demand for ASL interpreters. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, the demand for ASL interpreters will continue to grow by 19% from 2018 to 2028.
In light of this, we proposed a mobile app that allows interpretation of ASL in daily life and in emergency situations.
What it does
General use
- Open the app and click real-time ASL interpretation
Emergency access
App activation by 3 quick press and 1 long-press on the phone power button
Activate phone camera "listening" to ASL commands
An option to contact a human ASL interpreter for help
Real-time ASL interpretation
Emergency sign buttons
Quick access buttons including call police, call an ambulance with a voice message about the user's location and need for a human ASL interpreter
Sign buttons for blood group, diabetic, allergies etc.
