Inspiration
Directions are confusing, especially when you are walking. Google/Apple maps don't always have the best arrows to support you. Rather than watching from a bird's eye view, why not see some of the streetview in video? With a bit of video, and suddenly navigation feels less like homework and more like aura farming.
What it does
SigMaps turns boring step-by-step directions into an engaging short-form clip with an engaging caption. The video is in Streetview, so it becomes much easier to see where you need to walk.
How we built it
With spirit and determination.
- Front end: React.js, tailwind,css
- Back end: python
- Gemini API, Mapillary API
Challenges we ran into
Lack of funding. Everything costs money these days, especially APIs ):. As co-op-less students, we have yet to get jobs to fund our project. As such, Carol had to use 2 emails, 1 discord and a 5 star review to get enough tokens to power our mock up. If we had funding we would definitely use Google Streetview API to optimize the project.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
SigMaps is the design magnum opus. Not only does the name seamlessly combine the words “sigma” and “maps”, the logo also holds great meaning. The logo forms a backwards L, which we will define as “not L”. “Not L” implies “W”, thus this project is a massive W, the greatest accomplishment we could be proud of here.
What we learned
The power of friendship. And if during the SE 101 labs we didn’t know how to use git, we DEFINITELY know now.
What's next for SigMaps
More funding for more functionalities pls. With money, we can use more tokens to create higher quality AI enhancements.
