Inspiration

Big data seemed like an interesting subject to tackle during Junction, but what cemented our wish to take up this challenge were the _ Stara people _ at the event. They were so passionate and exited about the possibilities, that we just had to give our best to try and help with a real world problem.

What it does

As we are tackling two problems, then SiD does two things:

  1. Gives a detailed overview of all the info concerning the car fleet with the Car Fleet Manager
  2. Tries to optimize the plant watering service based on real time weather data with the Watering Service Manger

Car Fleet Manager

The vehicle data provided by Stara is concentrated and visualized by vehicle in the interactive web app. This means that it is possible to get an in-depth overview of the cars milage, refueling habits, traveled routes and wash patterns.

Watering Service Manager

From zip code based live weather data SiD tries to optimize the optimal region selection and daily workload of the plant watering brigade. This means skipping locations during heavy rainfalls and increased activity during dry periods. SiD also keeps track of each region separately including last watering and rainfall since the last time the plant received attention.

How we built it

We build SiD by relying heavily on the data provided by Stara. The application is a web app built with _ Spring Boot _ we use among other services _ Google maps _ and _ OpenWeatherMap API-s _.

Challenges we ran into

The build process was riddled with challenges along the way from accessing and interpreting the data from Stara to configuring the weather assessment algorithm and to finally making all this data accessible via a simple and easy to use web app.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

The web application look and usability and the data portrayed is what we poured our soul out for and we are proud of what we accomplished.

What we learned

We learned that Helsinki has a huge amount meticulously collected and very useful data that can open up endless smart solutions in the future. Also as we were working closely with the map of Helsinki, we learned a number of things about the local region.

What's next for SiD - Stara Infra Dashboard

As the amount of data Stara provides is so huge and full of all sorts of business management optimizations, then the next steps for SiD would be to add more service managers to the dashboard. These include trash collection service manager based on people density information, grass cutting service manager and many others. SiD could become the one source for Stara to manage all it's main services as efficiently as possible.
