Inspiration

Inspired by games like Papa's Pizzeria and TLOZ: Breath of the Wild, Shrimp Soup is a testament to our love of magic, soup, and visual novels.

What it does

Shrimp Soup is a cooking game where the player helps customers with their problems by making them magical soups. Each customer has likes and dislikes, which are randomized at the start of each play through. By learning what ingredients certain customers prefer, the player can make the best soups possible! The game has some plot, but focuses on the cooking mechanic.

How we built it

Shrimp Soup was made using Unity and C#.

Challenges we ran into

Lots of software crashes, as well as art block and time zone differences. We also had some trouble getting the soup reaction scene to work, so that the customer would react to the soup based on both the contents of the soup and the initial prompt.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

This is our first time submitting a game made in Unity for a hackathon! We consider this the best project we've made so far: the art is cohesive, the game is well structured, and we managed to fit in nearly everything we wanted to do.

What we learned

We learned how to use event systems. We also learned to better manage our time. During previous hackathons, we'd usually stay up extremely late and still be rushing to get things done right before submitting. This time, we took breaks and got rest.

What's next for Shrimp Soup

Shrimp Soup, as it stands now, is more of a demo than finished game. The finished Shrimp Soup will have a "final boss" at the end of a week of working at the soup shop. Skills the player has acquired during the week (including player preferences and ingredient effects) will culminate. We also hope to add money to the game, so the player can be paid extra for good soups, and use that money to buy ingredients or maybe even decor. We also want to add a guide with hints that will help the player figure out what effects each ingredient has.
