Inspiration
We were inspired by our careless and grease-loving spending habits as CS majors. We need to buy less Red Bulls and Doritos.
What it does
In addition to acting like a regular shopping list, it indicates how sustainable each product is while also suggesting more sustainable alternatives to it.
How we built it
We used React and Typescript for the front end, and python running a flask server for the backend.
Challenges we ran into
We were relatively new to React so that was a learning curve. We also provide vendor info so looking for vendors that allow scraping was a challenge. Maintaining a large enough database for all alternatives for products.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We successfully created a clean looking frontend We compiled a large database of products based on their sustainability We successfully connected the front and the backend We survived on 2 hours of sleep :)
What we learned
React Python TypeScript MUI Axios selenium Scikit learn
What's next for Shopgrade
We want to expand our database to consider not only carbon emissions but also water and land usage for different use to determine sustainability. We also want to provide more alternatives for each product We want to expand to mobile apps in addition to the website (that is just an MVP).
