Inspiration
We’ve witnessed the fear and uncertainty faced by immigrants in our own communities — friends, classmates, coworkers, and family. Many undocumented individuals avoid legal institutions or even stepping outside due to fear of ICE enforcement, especially with reports of actions occurring near courthouses. Our goal with ShieldUp is to empower people with knowledge of their constitutional rights and give them a sense of security in moments that often feel powerless. We want to restore confidence, protect the vulnerable, and stand up for justice — one tap at a time
What it does
ShieldUp is a mobile app that helps individuals assert their rights during encounters with immigration enforcement. Key features include:
- A tappable red card that displays legal rights when approached by ICE
- The ability to share your last known location with trusted contacts in emergencies
- Apple Wallet integration for quick access to the red card
- A community-powered ICE sighting map to stay informed and alert others in real-time ## How we built it We developed ShieldUp using React Native with Expo, allowing us to build for both iOS and Android. We designed a clean user interface focused on speed, accessibility, and multilingual support. ## Challenges we ran into Learning and debugging React Native components on the fly ## Accomplishments that we're proud of Learning and building a fully functional React Native app from scratch ## What we learned Core React Native concepts and Expo CLI ## What's next for ShieldUp Ultimately, we hope to launch it on the App Store and Google Play to make a real difference in the lives of undocumented individuals and their allies.
