Inspiration

One major part of ‘social equity’ is equal representation between genders in tech. The fact that some women lack resources to pursue education in male-dominated STEM fields, or do not have equal opportunities for leadership roles in the tech industry is quite discouraging for many young females.

What it does

Our app’s main motive is to encourage these young girls to meet and connect with like-minded females. Now they can find a coding companion with similar interests and skills to help them along the way; whether that's in college courses, extracurricular clubs, hackathons, or a friend to work on a side project with. We hope our app can help underrepresented gender identities and minorities feel a sense of community and welcomed into the world of tech!

How we built it

We designed this app using Figma, a collaborative interface design tool. It was a very user-friendly platform to create the wireframe of our app since two of our team members were beginners. Additionally, we incorporated connections to make our buttons interactive and allow screen control to multiple different views.

Challenges we ran into

Some of the challenges that we experienced while creating our app were trouble with the design, deciding on a suitable colour scheme with our app, and creating good options for the buttons. There was also a glitch in the system where whenever we clicked on a button it would disappear so we were forced to delete an entire screen and start all over. Luckily, our team members were very diligent, and we were able resolve the bug even after this little hiccup.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

Some accomplishments we are proud of include figuring out how to link the buttons in Figma together and brainstorming an authentic design. We spent so much time mulling over different palettes, even resorting to colour generators at times, but in the end we were able to create a retro, techy aesthetic which looked amazing! Overall, we are proud of bringing our idea to life.

What we learned

From the experience of creating this app, we learned the basics of team work and social skills. We became more comfortable speaking to each other on zoom and collaborated to learn the basics of a new interface design tool. Not to mention, most of my team had gone into this hackathon not having a very clear idea of what we wanted to do, but by the end, came out very confident of our contribution.

What's next for SHEmeets

In the future, we hope to develop SheMeets into a real app and successfully publish it on the Apple Store. We would also like to start promoting this app on all social media platforms and cater it towards young females looking towards a future in areas of computer science and tech in general.
